But a few months from now, when I've finished, I'm sure it will have been worth it. The ripping is undoubtedly the bit that takes the time. Basically the same as Graham said, except I do them one at a time and his rig can seemingly cope with multiple simultaneous rips. Ripping a BluRay is about 40 minutes and a DVD about 15 minutes. Haven't tried streaming from it yet, so that's a little untested, but I do rip using My Movies and AnyDVD HD. 18Tb with about 14Tb usable after RAID loses.

My choice has been to build my own PC and stuff it full of drives using a RAID card. That really is an awesome industrial bit of kit. I suggest you have a look at Smurfin's thread for some good advice on ripping your discs. It can give excellent quality at a smaller size, but as it does convert & compress there will be some loss of quality - although you may not be able to notice it if you are carefull with how much compression you set. However AFAIK it is not a ripping tool so the likes of AnyDVD will still be required to get the media off the physical disc. Handbreak is a well know program for compressing a rip to save HDD space. So as long as the rip includes the HD audio track and your media player can pass it on to your AV system you wont loose any quality. MakeMKV and AnyDVD do not convert the video or audio in any way. But most media players will still let you skip through the chapters, but without the menu it can be difficault to find the required scene unless you know its chapter number. For this reason I know some people have stopped using it.Īn MKV rip does not give you access to the disc menu, and depending on your media player that may not have access to a BluRay menu with any type of rip - even a full ISO. I use this alongside Slysoft AnyDVD HD as this is one of the most reliable programs at enabling you to rip your discs.Ī MakeMKV rip does have an issue with not automatically showing forced subtitles unless they are hard coded onto the video track.

This will enable you to rip most (possibly all) discs as long as you keep it updated. MakeMKV is free to use while it is still a beta program, but once finalised it will be chargeable for BluRay, but still free for DVD. With the likes of MakeMKV you can remove a lot of unwanted extras to save a fair bit of space without any loss of picture or sound quality as it does not compress the media. I'm sure I have more concerns too but it would be good if someone who knows about this stuff, not a complete noob like myself, would be able to shed a bit of light on the above and the best approach to this?Ī full DVD rip will average approx 6Gb, a BluRay approx 30 - 40Gb

Copy Protection - Getting half way through my collection and finding out that my favourite movie doesn't rip!.Data Storage - would take a few terrabytes at least, by my reckoning.Although it's nice to look at, it's a pain! Is it worth it? I have over 1,000 and it'll take a while but it will free up so much space taken up by my physical collection.

However, more and more I think about it, the more I'm thinking that it may be a good idea to convert my movies and TV shows too. I've spent the past 12 months ripping a lot of my music collection to FLAC and am very pleased with the results, soon I'll be able to banish my physical collection to the attic! Great!
